Meet the Author Behind a Cancer Survivorship Story
Jane S. Bradford, B.A., M.A., is a teacher, homemaker, wife, mother of three, stepmother, grandmother, and poet whose writing has long helped her examine the parts of life that are difficult to put into conversation.
Raised in Connecticut, she spent eleven years in Manhattan before settling in Vienna, Virginia. Bradford had been writing poetry for more than twenty years when a routine mammogram in July 2019 revealed breast cancer. Suddenly, writing became more than reflection. It became a place to record her fear after cancer diagnosis, questions about treatment, a changing body, and the private emotional effects of cancer.
Her poems grew alongside her breast cancer treatment experience, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, reconstruction, isolation, and recovery. The difficult breast cancer chemotherapy experience introduced fatigue, hair loss, neuropathy, uncertainty, and periods when familiar routines no longer felt possible.
Bradford also writes candidly about loneliness and breast cancer, depression after breast cancer, and anxiety after breast cancer. Her work reads at times like a deeply personal breast cancer journal, preserving emotions before time could soften them.
Years later, her perspective on living with cancer has expanded into a deeper understanding of cancer survivorship and breast cancer recovery. She does not treat survival as a simple happy ending.
Instead, Jane hopes her experience can stand beside other inspirational cancer stories and inspirational breast cancer stories by offering something grounded in reality: the voice of a woman who remembers how frightening the beginning felt and now wants others facing the same uncertainty to know they are not walking alone.
